Zimbabwe’s aviation authority said Monday it expects RwandAir to start flying into Harare before year end after successful conclusion of negotiations.

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) chief executive David Chawota told Xinhua that negotiations took long to conclude because three countries were involved.
RwandAir was initially expected to start Harare flights in 2014.

“This year we are now pretty confident that RwandAir will be coming into Harare before the end of the year,” Chawota said.

“The talks were not finished because the operations they wanted to embark on required talks between more than one country. It was not just Rwanda- Zimbabwe but Rwanda, Zimbabwe and South Africa so the talks took a little bit longer,” he added.

During the Aviation Festival,  which has took place at Dubai, RwandAir Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operations Officer Jean-Paul Nyirubutama, has said that Zimbabwe, will be among the future destinations, with Sudan, Mali and Angola :

Nyirubutama said the airline is looking at new destinations in Zimbabwe, Angola, Sudan and Mali. RwandAir has carved out a niche of feeding African traffic through its Kigali hub with about 40 percent of its passengers connecting through its hub.

 RwandAir starts talks with the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe

Rwanda's national airline, RwandAir could be the latest airline to fly into Harare as the country continues with efforts to woo more airlines into the country. Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe chief executive Mr David Chawota confirmed the development although he could not disclose when exactly the airline will start flying into Zimbabwe.

"RwandAir might be the next airline to start flying into Zimbabwe, we are still negotiating," he said. RwandAir is one of the fastest growing airlines on the continent. Its fleet consists of four Boeing 737 series aircraft, two Bombardier CRJ-900 NextGen regional jets and one Bombadier Dash 8-Q400.

It serves one domestic destination, many regional cities such as Nairobi, Entebbe, Mombasa, Bujumbura, Dar es Salaam, and Kilimanjaro. The airline also serves Johannesburg, Dubai, Lagos, Accra, Douala and Juba in South Sudan, Libreville and Brazzaville.

Mr Chawota said apart from RwandAir they are also actively engaging Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines.

In a long interview on the Rwanda News Times, published on 13 November 2013, John Mirenge, the RwandAir's CEO unveiled, the future stratgey of RwandAir. But John Mirenge talks about also the majors events at RwandAir, in 2013.

Destinations :

"We shall soon start flying into Douala (already announced,planned for end of march 2014), Khartoum, Lusaka and Harare".

Currently, RwandAir flies to 14 destinations, in Africa and in Middle East. This year, RwandAir started flights to Ghana and South Sudan. The goal of RwandAir is that Kigali becomes a hub into Africa. To reach this goal, RwandAir needs to add more destinations. The Abidjan service will start in 2014.The Mumbai service has a strong chance to start in 2014, via Dar Es Salaam, while, flights to China will begin in 2015, with the arrival of the B787.

Fleet and staff :

The plan is to grow our fleet to 12 aircraft in total in the next five years.

In 2013, RwandAir leased two B737-700NG, from ILFC, replacing the older B737-500s. RwandAir will take delivery of a brand new DASH Q400NG, in February 2014, replacing, the small Dash 200. Last week, RwandAir unveiled the configuration : 7 seats in Business and 67 in Economy. It will be deployed to Kamembe (Rwanda), Brazzaville (Republic of Congo), Libreville (Gabon), Nairobi and Mombasa (Kenya), Dar Es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Bujumbura (Burundi) and Entebbe (Uganda).

Currently RwandAir hires about 500 employees. This year, RwandAir sent about 20 Rwandans to perform a training to become  pilot. Some days ago, RwandAir celebrated its first Rwandan captain rated on B737NG.

Awards, Partners, customer service and social medias :

After a struggling period, RwandAir is improving its customer care service. The airline is now more and more active on Twitter and Facebook. A new communication director joined RwandAir, in December 2013.

Moreover, RwandAir got a new website, last week, and plans are in the pipeline to provide a booking engine to book a hotel room or a car, on the airline website. Its frequent flyer program reached 10 000 members this year.

This year, RwandAir won two awards : the best short haul airlines in Africa and also the best innovator at the Kigali Trade Fair. Turkish Airlines and Air Uganda are the new partners for the Rwandan airline.
