Unfortunately at present the charges for using Kigali airport and costs of ground handling limit the economic feasibility of operating this route. This is a destination that we would very much like to fly to in the future, however we need to make sure the cost is right. Regards, Ed.

However according to an article published on Wavuti.com, 6 days ago, Ed Winter, says that Kigali is an expansive destination, cause there is only ground supplier (RwandAir) which leads to high taxes :

Kigali in Rwanda was also one of the original international route designations secured by fastjet from Tanzanian authorities. But Mr Winter says fastjet had decided against Kigali as it is a very expensive airport to operate into due to there being only one ground handling supplier. The small size of the market is also challenging. Kigali is currently served from Dar es Salaam by Rwandair with six weekly regional jet flights, according to Innovata data.

FastJet secures traffic rights to (finally) begin service to Kigali

This morning we were lucky to ask questions to the FastJet's CEO. And despite thousand questions, Richard Borin has anwsered to our questions. We have aksed him, if he can give us more informations, about the future flights  to Rwanda.

Here is his answer :

FastJet : We are in discussions with Kigali about landing charges. Rwanda is on our expansion plan and we will have further updates in the near future.

Yesterday, FastJet the Tanzanian Low Cost airline, announced via a statement that it secured traffic rights to (finally) begin flights to Kigali. In deed, since the first flight in November 2012, FastJet several times announced that Kigali will be one of its first destination outside Tanzania, among Entebbe and Nairobi. FastJet will load timetables in GDS, in coming weeks.

On the Dar Es Salaam - Kigali route, FastJet will compete with RwandAir, which currently serves the largest Tanzanian city, with a daily service operated with CRJ-900NGs, since 2010. According MIDT data (here), 19 000 passengers flew between Dar Es Salaam and Kigali, in 2012.

FastJet will be the first low cost airline to enter into Rwandan market. The airline was created by the EasyJet founder with the aim to be a Pan African Low Cost airline. FastJet is using a fleet of A319s.
