 What is Hillywood ?

Rwanda Film Festival also known us Hillywood (Rwanda is nicknamed " The Land of Thousand Hills") has established itself as the country’s most important cultural event, but also one of Africa’s most prestigious festival. For 14 days, film lovers, filmmakers, industry professionals and media watch the best in new cinema from established masters and new talent both local and international.

The objective is to promote and encourage awareness, appreciation and understanding of the art of cinema in Rwanda. Our mandate is to present the most outstanding films produced in every part of the world. Films are selected on the basis of quality and originality. The Festival also promotes contacts between industry professionals to assist in the development of the Rwandan motion picture industry.

“FINDING HILLYWOOD gives me goose-bumps. In an era of mega-budgets and special effects, here’s a fascinating, compelling, and universal story about the power of…story. It reminds me of why some of us became film-makers, and why all of us became film-lovers.”

Phil Alden Robinson, Writer / Director, FIELD OF DREAMS

“The film is simultaneously a Rwandan history lesson, and also a lesson in the way (the power of) media can facilitate and activate forces of healing… the idea of large communities (anywhere) in the world seeing a movie (experiencing cinema) for the very first time is astounding…subtle evocations of the first audiences watching the first lumiere films.”

“This is wonderful work, and exactly the kind of thing we Americans should be doing to connect with the rest of the world in a good way–with support, imagination, encouragement, and whatever technical expertise we have.”

Peter Clothier, Author (Http://Www.Peterclothier.Com/)

“A project that speaks to people’s hearts about a new generation of story tellers in a country that has many compelling stories as it does hills! I’m very excited by the potential of this film to show the world a side of Rwanda that points to the future while respecting the past – we need more stories of “hope” like this.”—
