Rwanda, Italy sign air service agreement

The agreement will allow RwandAir to operate air services to Italy as well as Italy’s commercial airlines to operate in Rwanda without restrictions.

Rwanda and Italy have signed an agreement that will see the two countries open skies for each other’s commercial airlines, under what is known as bilateral air services agreements in aviation terms.

The agreement was signed this morning between Rwanda’s Minister for Infrastructure, Claver Gatete and Italy’s Ambassador to Uganda, Domenico Fornara. Fornara also oversees Italy’s interests in Rwanda and Burundi.

Gatete told the press that the agreement could help expand Rwanda’s air transport network. The arrangement was agreed upon last year in Sri Lanka between Rwanda and the European nation, the minister revealed.

According to an article published on Tribune.com.pk, Pakistan and Rwanda signed an Air Service Agreement, during the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation Event held between October 19 and 23 in Antalya, Turkey.

"This undoubtedly is the first step to make the operations framework attractive for the airlines of other countries and making aviation activities more lucrative in Pakistan.

These countries included Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, European nations represented by the European Commission, Ireland, Malta, Morocco, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda, Serbia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Turkey, the UAE and Vietnam".

Thanks to this agreement, Pakistan Airlines or RwandAir, can start flights between Rwanda and Pakistan, at any moment. However, the demand between Pakistan and Africa seems to not be high.

Since 2013, there are no direct flights between Africa and Pakistan. Eritrean Airlines, Egyptair, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways left the Pakistan, in 2013, 2004 and 2001 respectively. Pakistan Airlines left African market, early 2000s.

Trade and tourism between Rwanda and the Central Africa Republic (CAR) could increase, thanks to the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) signed between the two countries yesterday.

The agreement means the national carrier, RwandAir, can fly to the CAR without any limitation (granted the fifth freedom).

It also allows the two countries to establish and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the air transport industry while facilitating the ease of doing business between Rwanda and CAR, Alexis Nzahabwanimana, the state minister for transport, said.

“The agreement provides us a business opportunity to strengthen our commercial aviation and make it more profitable for our people to trade and share experiences without any limitations,” Nzahabwanimana said during the signing ceremony in Kigali.

The deal also provides opportunities for both countries’ airlines to grow in a more liberalised global environment, the minister added.

Mauritius and Rwanda to sign a BASA (Bilateral Service Air Agreement)

Thanks to the BASA, airlines from Mauritius and Rwanda, will able to operate flights between Rwanda and Mauritius, without any restrictions. Since some years, Mauritius and Rwanda boosted ties. Mauritius has mainly invested in Telecom and Tourism fields.

Rwanda and German governments Wednesday signed a bilateral agreement aimed at facilitating easier air travel to and from Germany and the rest of Europe.

The agreement came as a result of the 2010 aviation negotiations between the two governments to allow commercial air transport services between their territories.

Speaking after the signing in Kigali, Rwanda's state minister in charge of transport, Alexis Nzahabwanimana explained that the deal aims to promote competition among airlines in the industry with minimum government interference and regulation.

"This agreement comes to complement the international regulations that facilitate airlines to move freely in the world," the minister told journalists.

Under the deal, it is expected that air transport opportunities will increase, including the introduction of direct flights to Germany from Rwanda and more affordable air tickets for travelers.

This agreement, the minister added, allows airlines registered in Rwanda to fly to Germany and those registered in Germany to fly to Rwanda.

"It also allows airlines which are registered in Rwanda to fly to different destinations where we have a similar agreement from Germany," he said. This comes as Rwanda's national flag carrier, RwandAir plans to open up European routes in 2017.

Nzahabwanimana said the agreement forms part of the country's wider plans to become the region's aviation hub in the coming years. An airport like Frankfurt in Germany serves like a European aviation hub, he said.

Peter Fahrenhltz, the Germany ambassador to Rwanda, expressed optimism that in the next two years flight charges would go down to meet the air transportation convenience needs of passengers.
