South African Airways resumes code share agreement with RwandAir, from 09 December 2013

South African Airways ceased flights to Kigali, on 07 December 2013. According to Amadeus, SAA will start to put its flights numbers on the RwandAir service between Johannesburg and Kigali, on 09 December 2013.
Flights are operated by RwandAir, but SAA can sell tickets on this service. RwandAir timetables to Johannesburg are : HERE

South African Airways resumes code share agreement with RwandAir , but could suspend service to Kigali

It seems that South African Airways will suspend its service to Kigali. No more infos currently, but the code share agreement will be effective from 07 December. On South African Aviation forums, some people say that the route is not well performing. We are waiting for the confirmation from South African Airways.
7 years after the suspension, South African Airways and RwandAir will resume a code share agreement. South African Airways will put its flight numbers on all RwandAir flights. Both airlines planned to resume this agreement in 2010 (See the text published on 10 August 2010).
What a code share ?
Codeshare is a co-operative arrangement whereby airlines carry passengers whose tickets have been issued by another airline. The intent is to provide passengers with a wider choice of destinations than any individual airline might offer on its own
Statement :
South African Airways and RwandAir, the national carrier of Rwanda, announced that they have signed a bilateral code share agreement for operations between Johannesburg and Kigali.
RwandAir will be the operating carrier, while South African Airways will market the route. Rwandair flies seven times per week between the two cities. Under the new agreement, RwandAir will provide feeding and de-feeding flights between its network and that of SAA’s from its hub at O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA). In turn SAA customers will be able to travel between Johannesburg and Kigali with the convenience of travelling on a single-ticket should they connect from another destination outside Johannesburg.
Kendy Phohleli, SAA General Manager Commercial (Acting), said that RwandAir and SAA have made great strides in developing the Rwandan aviation sector. “Through the codeshare agreement with Rwandair, SAA’s valued clientele will gain new travel choices to the Rwanda market via RwandAir’s increased presence in the market providing for seamless travel and status recognition through the respective frequent flyer programmes,” he said.
The CEO of RwandAir, John Mirenge, also stressed the airline’s commitment to develop Kigali as a hub. “O.R. Tambo International Airport is a well known hub for most African and world travellers. But to date we do not have many optimal hubs within the region that support the network of multiple airlines,” he noted. “This codeshare agreement helps us develop Kigali as a new hub, furthermore connecting it with other existing hubs like ORTIA and allowing the two airlines to join their respective networks.”
