Established in October 2009 to support Police operations, the RPAW played a major role in the Police missions by ensuring that people living in Rwanda are safe involved, and reassured.

According to the Chief Superintendent (CSP) Felix Bahizi Rutagerura, the Commandant of the Police air wing pointed out that part of its responsibilities was to help detect crime scenes and perform targeted patrols in crime suspect areas.

The air wing also transports Police officers for duties, government officials and is also in charge of photographic tasks.

For the moment, the RPAW operates a single Robinson R44 acquired from Akagera Aviation (Rwanda), but plans are in pipeline to add more helicopters. The police air wing has several pilots, engineers and technicians, both trained by Akagera Aviation and Los Angeles Helicopters.
